“A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lumbini is the birthplace of Lord Buddha, drawing in over 400,000 pilgrims each year, both Buddhist and non-Buddhist, to its Sacred Garden, where a commemorative pillar built by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka marks the exact spot where the Buddha was born in 623 BC, with the sacred Puskarni Pond and monastic zones of various countries depicting different Buddhist sects, including the Japan Peace Stupa, which is 41 meters tall and features four different Buddha statues facing the four cardinal directions. ”
The birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, often known as the Buddha, is Lumbini, which is situated in the southwest of Nepal. With over 400,000 visitors annually, including non-Buddhists, it is one of the most significant pilgrimage places for Buddhists globally. Lumbini is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its significance in terms of both culture and spirituality.
The center of Lumbini, where the Buddha was born in 623 BC, is the Sacred Garden. The birthplace of the Buddha is marked with a memorial pillar that was built by the Indian Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC. The Maya Devi Temple, devoted to the mother of the Buddha, is situated within the nine square kilometer landscape. A stone sculpture representing the Buddha's birth can be found in the temple; it depicts Maya Devi giving birth to Siddhartha while clinging to a tree branch. Another significant location in the Sacred Garden is the Puskarni Pond. It is thought that Queen Maya Devi bathed in this pond prior to giving birth to the Buddha. Additionally, that's where the baby Lumbini, in the southwest of Nepal, is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, popularly known as the Buddha. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Buddhists worldwide, drawing in excess of 400,000 visitors a year, including non-Buddhists. Lumbini's importance to both culture and spirituality has earned it recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Another centerpiece of the monastic zone is the Japan Peace Stupa, which was constructed by Japan's Nippon Jon Kyohoji. Four separate Buddha statues, facing the four cardinal directions, are positioned inside the stupa's dome, making it a 41-meter-tall building. Other nations that have constructed stunning temples and monuments in Lumbini include France, Germany, Vietnam, Thailand, Mongolia, and Sri Lanka. To truly appreciate the spiritual and cultural significance of Lumbini, it is advised to stay for at least three days due to the size of the Sacred Garden and the abundance of monasteries and temples to tour.
